Firstborn is a transferable title, a title of pre-eminence, and does not necessitate being a created thing when applied to Jesus. Firstborn does not mean first created.17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:15–17, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. But, since YHWH created all things alone, and the Word was God, then we can see the harmony in these verses. If this is the case, and the Word is the means by which God created, then it could not be said that YHWH created all things alone. The LORD (YHWH) is the sole creator of all things.Isaiah 44:24, “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, “I, the LORD, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself And spreading out the earth all alone,”. Yet, that cannot work in light of the following verses. Often this comment is offered in an attempt to deny the deity of Christ. Some might say that God used the pre-incarnate Christ as the conduit through whom creation was made.Notice “through him.” This shows the work of God through the Word. John the apostle is telling us that the Word, which later became flesh, (John 1:14) is the source of all creation. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.Yet, John 1:1 already said the “Word was God.” To be God and with God implies a separation from God, yet also a sharing of the same nature of God, as John 1:1 says “the Word with God and the Word was God.” Notice the distinguishing between the “He” and “with God”.At the very least this is a plurality within the Godhead This hints at the Trinity due to the word being God and yet with God.This is problematic because it implies polytheism.Jehovah’s Witnesses render this as “and the Word was a God”.God created through his word is Genesis 1:3 demonstrates, “Then God said, “Let there be light” and there was light.”.John 8:58, “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.'”.Therefore, John was seeking to establish that the word which was God, and was in the beginning, is that governing principle. Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1998. The Jews understood the word to mean God. The word “word” was familiar to the Greeks who understood it to be the rational principle that governed the universe.Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”.“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.Menu: Introduction | Sitemap | Free Downloads | Our Bible study of the books in my father's bibliographies are available at the Internet Archive.Bible Study on the Gospel of John, Chapter 1: The Word who became flesh THE WORD The Inspired Revelation of God of the History of Salvation Our Free Downloads Page - located on this siteīible Commentary on the Books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomyīooks of the Bible covered in this commentary.
